What's a 100 day Birthday?
It is Chinese tradition to celebrate a baby's arrival and introduce him/her to family and friends on either their 30 day or 100 day birthday.
"Many Chinese parents host a celebration known as a "Red Egg and Ginger Party" in which the baby receives a name and is lauded with gifts by her friends and family. Due to the dire infant mortality rates in China prior to the early 20th century, surviving the first month was a cause for celebration. Despite much improved mortality rates, many families carry on this celebration as a symbol of their cultural past." (Read more here: eHow | Chinese Traditional Baby Gifts)
Because the boys were in the NICU for the first 3 weeks of their lives, we decided to celebrate at the 100 day mark (June 9). It has the same significance and meaning as the 30 day celebration. In addition, "100 days after the baby's birth...is an important day for the baby because 100 days birth celebration represents the wish that the baby will live 100 years."
